'New Song Out' is NOT a Music PR Pitch

If you want to land a music review, go deeper. Here's how.

The latest estimate from Spotify was that around 2 million tracks get uploaded to the platform every MONTH! Everybody has a new song out every day! So no matter how meaningful one is to you, or how hard you worked on it, most music blogs and magazines will not review a single (unless you're like, Beyonce) if they're not intrigued and interested in writing about your overall STORY.

So here's a hard truth: You might not be ready for PR if you don't know your story yet. What makes you unique? Why should people care? What were the key turning points in your journey as a musician up to this point? Are you part of your local music scene IRL, or are you part of a niche online community? What impact are you having on that community? Are you carving out a new sub-genre, collaborating with anyone interesting, or aligning with any cool brands or causes? Any of those things might be your ANGLE, and it's the thing music journalists want to write about!

Your angle is also the thing that will snag a music fan's interest. They're bombarded with infinite music options all the time; how will you stand out? As an artist, you're ultimately trying to connect with other people, and the music is a vehicle for that connection.

Do you know what your angle is? If so, let us know in the comments, and if not, shoot me an email and I'll help you figure it out. Thanks yall, xx Michelle
