Having Trouble Getting Press? You Might Be Starting Too Late

Here's a better way to plan your release so you can land your dream publication.

If you're struggling to reach journalists or bloggers about your news or launch, this might be why: Top-tier national outlets plan out their editorial calendars months in advance, so you'll need to send top-tier pitches at least a month or two before the release. Smaller blogs need at least 3-4 weeks.

This is because it takes time for writers to see your email out of the hundreds they get every day, read the press release, decide they're interested, coordinate an interview with you, conduct and transcribe the interview, and write the piece itself. It's a lot of work we're asking from these writers! So we have to give them ample time to achieve the quality we're looking for. By the time an event happens, they're already working on the next month's pieces. Too late.

If you're working with a publicist or marketer, please give them all your assets (quotes, bio, photos, artwork, etc.) well in advance of your target release date so they can work their magic properly! If you wait too long, there will be nothing they can do for you. I even put a line in my contracts about this so my clients know what to expect upfront. Planning ahead is the key to getting the right eyes on the project you worked so hard on! Don't let it go to waste.

What do you think is a good timeline for pitching? Have you had trouble with this in the past? Let us know in the comments, and please share this post with a friend!
